Research and Design Assistant
Newgrind (now RhinoGrind) designs concrete grinding equipment for contractors, and it was my very first taste of engineering. I started as a production technician. After my first year of engineering school, I also began working as a research and design assistant, helping my supervisor develop and build prototype machines for production.

About this reflection
My work at Newgrind Inc. is covered by a non-disclosure agreement, so this page has no designs, drawings or data. It describes the work at a high level and what I took away from it.
Small design upgrades
Because I knew the grinders well from building them, I was able to make small engineering changes that made the machines easier to assemble and less likely to fail. I also ran amperage, voltage and weight-capacity load tests on prototypes. In field testing, I recorded and analyzed the results and submitted my conclusions.
Team & reflection
I enjoyed working closely with the production team and having direct input on how the machines could be improved. Since manufacturing volume was low, we could quickly roll changes into the production line and see the impact immediately.
